Dr. Richard Gray, Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University has received a 2019-2020 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant. He will be spending the 2019-2020 academic year in South Africa at the University of the Free State (UFS) where he will carry out research and teaching in the field of astronomical spectroscopy.
He has been working already to provide UFS with a spectrograph for their 1.5-meter Boyden telescope. This instrument will greatly expand the research capabilities of that telescope and will make possible collaborative research in astronomy between our two institutions. He plans to start two spectroscopic research projects of mutual interest to himself and faculty at UFS during his stay, as well as teach two courses on astronomical spectroscopy. Long term benefits for both of our institutions will be collaborative research in other STEM fields, faculty and student exchanges, and opportunities for training a new generation of astronomers at both institutions, drawing especially from under-represented groups in Appalachia and South Africa.
